New safety requirements for small craft operators take effect across Papua New Guinea's coastal waters. The requirements apply to vessels under 12 metres operating in coastal and inter-island waters.
Operators must carry approved lifejackets for every person on board, a means of signalling distress, and sufficient fuel and drinking water for the intended voyage. Vessels must also be registered with NMSA under the Small Craft Act.
What operators need to do
- Check that lifejackets on board are approved, undamaged and correctly sized.
- Carry a distress signalling device and keep it accessible.
- Confirm the vessel's registration is current before departure.
- Advise someone ashore of the intended route and expected arrival time.
NMSA's Community Development team will run awareness sessions in coastal and island communities over the coming months. Operators who need help understanding the requirements should contact the Authority.
